Summary

The Ridge Gliders of Erebus-IV are translucent, sheet-like colonial organisms observed during the third orbital pass of the follow-up survey of Erebus-IV, Wolf 1061 system. Each individual spans approximately two to six meters along its major axis with an estimated dry mass of less than one kilogram. The organisms occupy the equatorial ridge line of Erebus-IV, where locally elevated CO2 outgassing from residual volcanic fractures produces a microatmosphere dense enough to sustain photophoretic lift. They are provisionally classified as non-sentient colonial flora-analogues. No response to structured comm-laser interrogation was detected at any tested wavelength, and no behavioral indicators of directed cognition were recorded. Classification is pending closer contact study under Intergalactic Accords Protocol 4 (non-communicative biota).

Observed Behavior and Lift Mechanism

Ridge Gliders aggregate in loose flotillas numbering forty to ninety individuals along the morning terminator as equatorial ridge rock absorbs stellar radiation from Wolf 1061 and generates thermal gradients. Spectrometric analysis confirms a photophoretic lift mechanism: the upper membrane of each sheet darkens progressively to absorb incident starlight while the ventral surface remains highly reflective, producing a sustained radiative pressure differential sufficient for passive ascent in the low-gravity (0.71g), low-pressure environment. Flotillas disperse before local solar noon, approximately 20.6 hours into the 41.2-hour rotation cycle, as thermal gradients equalize along the ridge. No nocturnal or post-noon activity has been observed to date.

Operational Advisory

Future landing teams operating along or near the equatorial ridge line are cautioned to avoid low-altitude flight through ridge thermals during morning hours. The sheet-like morphology and near-transparent optical profile of Ridge Gliders present a credible foreign-object ingestion hazard for atmospheric intake manifolds and exposed radiator surfaces. Standard pre-descent LIDAR sweeps should be augmented with UV-band imaging to detect membrane fluorescence. Threat classification remains NONE; no predatory, territorial, or defensive behavior has been recorded.

KEY FACTS ON RECORD

  • Each Ridge Glider spans 2 to 6 meters with an estimated mass under 1 kilogram
  • Photophoretic lift is generated by differential membrane absorption: darkened upper surface, reflective lower surface
  • Flotillas of 40 to 90 individuals form along the morning terminator and disperse before local noon
  • No response to comm-laser interrogation at any tested wavelength; provisionally classified non-sentient
  • Equatorial ridge CO2 microclimate provides the medium for photophoretic flight in the otherwise N2-dominated atmosphere

REGISTRAR NOTE:The contributor's draft is well-observed and internally consistent with the Erebus-IV parent record. One note: the parent world's atmosphere is listed as "thin N2 / trace Ar" at approximately 1.8 kPa with no mention of CO2, yet the draft references a "thin CO2 atmosphere" as the medium for photophoretic lift. The Registrar has amended the rewrite to reference a CO2-enriched microclimate along the equatorial ridge, reconciling this discrepancy without discarding the contributor's photophoretic mechanism, which is otherwise physically sound at the stated pressure and gravity regime.
