Physical Description

Erebus-IV is a cold terrestrial body occupying the fourth orbital slot around Wolf 1061, an M3.5V red dwarf approximately 14.1 light-years from Sol. The world maintains a slow rotation period of 41.2 hours and a surface gravity of 0.71g. Its atmosphere is thin and unbreathable, composed primarily of molecular nitrogen with trace argon and negligible free oxygen. Surface geology is dominated by extensive basalt flood plains, consistent with an early volcanic epoch now largely quiescent. Deep canyon systems, some exceeding 3 km in depth, bisect the equatorial latitudes. Residual geothermal gradients within these canyons are sufficient to sustain pockets of liquid water beneath sealed rock strata, confirmed by subsurface radar returns from the initial drone survey.

Settlement Candidacy

Three candidate settlement sites have been identified along the equatorial canyon rim. Each site offers proximity to confirmed water-ice deposits and natural rock overhangs capable of providing partial shielding against charged-particle bombardment during stellar flare events. Wolf 1061 exhibits a quasi-periodic flare cycle with a mean interval of approximately nine standard days. During peak flare windows, surface radiation levels are projected to reach R3 or higher, rendering unshielded extravehicular activity non-viable. All proposed habitation architectures assume buried or canyon-wall-integrated modules with a minimum of 4 meters regolith-equivalent overhead shielding.

Operational Constraints

The primary hazard classification for Erebus-IV is radiation exposure from the host star's flare cycle. Any permanent or semi-permanent installation will require a dedicated flare-warning sensor array in a monitoring orbit, integrated with a rigid surface-operations protocol restricting all exterior work to verified quiescent windows. Support infrastructure must include pressurized subsurface transit corridors between habitat modules and work sites. The Offworld Workforce Authority notes that postings to Erebus-IV will carry a mandatory flare-discipline certification and fall under hardened-environment labor scheduling as defined in OWA Circular 9-2028.

KEY FACTS ON RECORD

  • Erebus-IV orbits Wolf 1061, an M-dwarf 14.1 light-years from Sol, in the 4th orbital position.
  • Surface gravity is 0.71g with a 41-hour rotation period and a thin, unbreathable nitrogen-argon atmosphere.
  • Equatorial canyon systems harbor subsurface liquid water sustained by residual geothermal heat.
  • Three candidate settlement sites have been identified along the equatorial canyon rim with access to water ice and natural rock shielding.
  • Wolf 1061 flares approximately every nine days, requiring buried habitats and strict surface-operations scheduling.

REGISTRAR NOTE:Wolf 1061 is a known M-dwarf with plausible flare activity, and the geophysical details (basalt plains, residual geothermal heat, subsurface liquid water) are consistent with a 0.71g terrestrial body at that orbital distance. The contributor is advised that the stated "thin nitrogen, trace argon" atmosphere implies surface pressures well below the Armstrong limit; future filings should include a pressure estimate in kPa for the spec strip.
