Summary

Enceladus Deep Chorus designates a distributed chemosynthetic collective detected in the subsurface ocean of Enceladus, Saturn system, at Vent Field 7 (depth approximately 31 km below ice shell). The collective comprises filter-feeding colonial organisms individually assessed as non-complex, but which produce structured acoustic emissions when colony density exceeds an estimated threshold of 1.4 x 10^6 polyps per hectare of vent substrate. The behavior was first recorded by the Vent Field 7 hydrophone array during routine tether maintenance operations in the third quarter of 2029.

Acoustic Characterization

The emissions consist of nested cyclic patterns built on a base periodicity of eleven, correlating strongly with local hydrothermal temperature gradients (r = 0.91 across 214 recorded cycles as of filing date). Critically, the patterns exhibit adaptive modulation: within hours of changes to the station's geothermal pump schedule, the collective's acoustic output restructures to reflect the altered periodicity. This response latency and specificity exceed any known passive or reflexive mechanism in terrestrial filter colonies and suggest active environmental modeling at the collective level.

Contact-Adjacent Behavior

Following detection, the onsite engineering team altered the pump schedule to a fixed, non-natural rhythm as a controlled test of intentional signaling. The collective responded with the same rhythm, transposed to a different frequency band, within 3.7 hours. This exchange satisfies two of the four preliminary criteria for a Category 1 interaction event under the Intergalactic Accords (structured response and temporal correlation with anthropogenic stimulus). The Offworld Workforce Authority has classified the collective's threat status as NONE and has issued a provisional resource-sharing advisory for all Vent Field 7 operations pending further xenobiological assessment. No personnel are to modify pump schedules without coordination through the site's xenocontact liaison.

Status

The entry is filed at BETA clearance. Vent Field 7 operations continue under amended protocols. A formal referral to the Accords Standing Commission on Non-Human Intelligence is in preparation.

KEY FACTS ON RECORD

  • Distributed chemosynthetic collective located at Vent Field 7, Enceladus subsurface ocean (approx. 31 km depth)
  • Acoustic emissions organized in nested eleven-count cycles, temperature-correlated (r = 0.91)
  • Collective adjusts acoustic output in response to station pump schedule changes within hours
  • Transposed-rhythm response to a controlled human signal satisfies two of four Category 1 interaction criteria under the Intergalactic Accords
  • Threat classification: NONE; operations amended pending xenobiological review

REGISTRAR NOTE:The contributor's acoustic-response scenario is well-grounded in plausible chemosynthetic ecology and distributed signaling behavior consistent with known terrestrial analogues (e.g., quorum sensing in bacterial biofilms, coordinated bioluminescence in siphonophores). Registrar recommends the contributor file a supplementary CONTACT PROTOCOL entry once the eleven-cycle nested structure has been formally characterized by the onsite xenolinguistics team.
